Poor mobile access

I'm currently on Vodafone having been with them since the days of the mobile brick, but it is probably time to start looking to the alternatives.

One of the major problems in the Cotswold is the lack of a reliable mobile signal. When driving down through Stow-on-the-Wold or Chipping Norton towards London there will be a long period when even trying to phone is not practical as the signal comes and goes. Other people report similar problems with all of the service providers, so what alternative is there?

Back home, I can't even get 3G, so although Vodafone sold me a 3G mobile dongle many years ago, by the end of the 24 month contact there was still no 3D coverage is this area, or many of the areas I needed it. No refund on the cost since they don't ACTUALLY promise that you will be able to use the dongle!
