I have a nice 43" 4k LG television, but it can be irritating at times. As with everything today it has 'AI' options so you can ask for stuff, but most of the time I need to see a list of options such as the television guide and so just clicking on the channel is a lot quicker that asking for it. That is where the first niggle comes in since it does not remember the guide as the Linux TV box does, and I can navigate that directly from the computer desktop, although the Freeview guide is a lot more flexible. Later at night, switching to the guide only gives the current program and while you can eventually see what is coming up, you can not navigate to it for more details, or look beyond it. Other niggles are the smart stuff itself. I will be watching a TV program and it will blank and tell me that is has to 'restart the application to recover memory'. It's a TV it should simply display a television program direct from the incoming signal? Invariably it will happen when one is just watching something interesting and you miss key points! I've not seen it while playing pre-recorded stuff or that streamed from Plex so why with live TV?
Another little niggle is the remote control itself, which is a lot smaller than previous ones I'm used to. It seems to be missing key buttons such as 'info' which on my previous TV brought up what was on, what was next and silly little things like THE TIME. I know the TV displays it as I have an older generic remote which I'd picked up for another TV, and that has an 'info' button and gives the display. Only problem with this remote, no working 'home' button so you can't get over to Plex using it. I don't have the programming guide, and it's not on line, but I remember it only allowed to select model of TV and not fine tuning the unused buttons. More expense buying yet another remote? Not that desperate as yet ...
Once one has access to all the apps installed on the TV you are having to put up with 'advertising' for new content and apps none of which I have any interest in, and most of the 'installed' apps are of little use either, but can't be removed. My main access point is Plex, which has all my media archive, and even iPlayer is rarely used as I have all the interesting stuff archived on Plex as well. Feeding Plex is a regular activity and is augmented by the Linux TV box, which records up to two channels at a time, such as interesting documentaries over night. The main advantage of recording that content is I can strip the adverts before saving them which also reduces file sizes. That is another area that needs it's processes documenting. I make no excuse for using torrents to fill the gaps in my media archive caused by the original media servers still being in the hands of the police. Much of the old '4x3' programs are still available or are being repeated and can be recorded again, so the material is available free anyway.
Only problem is storage space is getting pressed again and I will need more hard disks soon.
